Solution

Step 1: Given:
Items carried by each hiker are:
1. Thermal cover of weight 3.4lb
2. Bag of weight 4.6lb
3. Water bottle of weight 2.2lb
Step 2: Now the total weight carried by each hiker is:
=3.4lb+4.6lb+2.2lb

Step 3: Now the weight carried by ‘x’ hikers is:

Weight carried by each hiker is =3.4lb+4.6lb+2.2lb

Then the weight carried by ‘x’ hiker is =(3.4lb+4.6lb+2.2lb)x
=[(3.4lb+4.6lb+2.2)lb]x {Distributive property}
=(10.2lb)x {simplest form}
Step 4: Total weight carried by the 4 hikers
In the simplest expression of weight carried by ‘x’ hikers that is
(10.2lb)x we just have to put x=4
=(10.2lb)4
=40.8lb
Final Answer: (10.2lb)xand40.8lb
