Question

On a linear escalator running between two points A and B, a boy takes time t1 to move from A to B, if the boy runs with a constant speed on the escalator. If the boy runs from B to A, he takes time t2 to reach B from A. What is the time taken by the boy to move from A to B if he stands still on the escalator?
[The escalator moves from A to B]

Solution

Let the speed of escalator be Ve
Distance traveled =S(from A to B)
t1=SVb+Ve
t2=SVbVe
If he stands on escalator, t=time taken=SVe
t1t2=VbVeVb+Vet1Vb+t1Ve=t2Vbt2Ve(t1+t2)Ve=(t2t1)Vb
Vb=(t1+t2t2t1)Vet1=SVe+(t1+t2t2t1)Ve=SVe[t2t1+t2+t1t2t1]=SVe(2t2t2t1)t=2t1t2t2t1
