Question

On adding a drop of barium chloride solution to an aqueous solution of sodium sulphite, white precipitate is obtained. On adding dilute hydrochloric acid to the reaction mixture, white precipitate disappears. Why?

BaCl2+Na2SO3BaSO3(whiteppt.)+2NaCl

BaSO3+2HClBaCl2+SO2+H2O

Due to the formation of BaCl2 which is soluble in water the white ppt. disappears.
