Solution

(a) Zinc salt solution was used.
(b) The formula of white gelatinous precipitate obtained is Zn(OH)2, zinc hydroxide.

On adding ammonia solution in drops, zinc salts such as zinc sulphate forms a white gelatinous precipitate of zinc hydroxide. On further adding excess of ammonium hydroxide, the formed precipitate of zinc hydroxide dissolves to form complex, colourless tetramine zinc(II) sulphate.
