Solution

The correct option is A Powdered sugar in hot water.

The dissolution of solid in a liquid depends upon the two factors:

1) Temperature: As the temperature of solvent increases, the kinetic energy of solute particles increases. Due to increase in the kinetic energy of solute particle, they can easily overcome inter-molecular force of attraction. So, they can easily dissolve in the solvent.

2) Surface area of solute: The higher the surface area of solute more easily it can dissolve in a solvent.

When sugar is dissolved in water, the solution feels cool to the touch which indicate when sugar is dissolved in water, it absorbed the heat from water to get solvated. Therefore, the dissolution of sugar in water is endothermic. An endothermic process is favoured by increase in temperature.

Also, when molecules have a large surface area, they will be able to absorb more heat, through the exposed surface. Powdered sugar has increased surface area as compared to normal cubes of sugar. Therefore, a hot solution and increased surface area will be favourable for the dissolution of sugar.

Hence, option (D) is correct.
