On electrolysis of CuSO4 solution in presence of platinum, the solution becomes colorless. Why?
Cathode:Cu2+Copperions+2e-→CuCopperatomAnode:2OH-Hydroxideions→H2O+12O2+2e-
So, the blue color of the solution disappears due to the formation of the Copper atom by the reduction of copper ions at the cathode electrode.
The following questions refer to the electrolysis of CuSO4 solution with copper electrodes. (i) What is the change in the mass of cathode and anode? (ii) What will happen to the colour of the electrolyte if platinum electrodes are used? Explain. (iii) Briefly, describe one practical application of electrolysis of CuSO4 solution.
On electrolyzing CuSO4, solution in presence of Pt, the solution becomes colorless, why?
