Question

On electrolysis of HCOONa(aq), Hydrogen gas is produced at which electrode?

Open in App
Solution

  1. During the electrolysis of aqueous Sodium formate(HCOONa) Hydrogen gas and Carbon dioxide gas are obtained.
  2. The Hydrogen gas is produced in the Cathode.
  3. And the Carbon dioxide gas is produced in the Anode.
  4. The cathodic and anodic reaction is,

Anode; 2HCOO-2CO2(g)Carbondioxidegas+2e-

Cathode; 2H++2e-H2(g)Hydrogengas

So the Hydrogen gas is produced in the Cathode.
