The increase in length of a rod depends on three factors:
1. Material of the rod.
It depends on the material because different materials have different arrangement of atoms. Hence, due to rise in temperature they expand in different ways according to the arrangement and constituent of the atoms in the particular material. [1 Mark]
2. Initial length of the rod.
The more the length of the material, the more is the increase in length with the same increase in temperature. [1 Mark]
3. Temperature to which the rod is heated.
When rods of same material and of equal lengths are heated through different rise in temperatures, it is found that increase in the length is more if more is the rise in temperature. The increase in the length of a rod is found to be directly proportional to the increase in its temperature. [1 Mark]
