Solution

  • Soda lime is a mixture of Sodium hydroxide(NaOH) and Calcium oxide(CaO)
  • Sodium acetate(CH3COONa) on heating with soda lime gives methaneCH4, a colorless gas 'A'.

CH3COONaaqSodiumacetate+NaOHaqSodiumhydroxideCaO/heatingCH4gMethane+Na2CO3aqSodiumcarbonate

The color less gas ‘A’ is Methane.

  • Methane is lighter than air.
  • Methane is very good fuel and hence it burns with a blue flame in excess of oxygen.
  • The balanced combustion equation of methane is as represented below :

CH4gMethane+2O2gOxygenCO2gCarbondioixde+2H2OgWater
