Question

On mixing acetone with chloroform, a reduction occurs in total volume. What type of deviations from ideal behaviour for solutions is shown in this case and why?

Open in App
Solution

The mixture of acetone and chlorophorm shows negative deviation.

In this type, the vapour pressure of non ideal solution is less than the partial pressure of the components if they form ideal solution too.
ΔHmix<0.

Negative deviation arise when the forces between the particles in the mixture are stronger than the mean of the forces between the particles in the pure liquids. So their vapour pressure will be lesser.

Hence the volume decreases.
