The correct option is C 40
Let X be the average score till the 28^th innings. So, the sum of the scores = 28 × X

It is given that $\frac{28 + X + 96}{29} = X + 2$

⇒ X = 96 - 58 = 38

New average = 38 + 2 = 40

Hence, option C is the correct answer.
