On the basis of location, classify meristematic tissues

The cells of meristematic tissues are called meristems. Meristems are classified by their location in the plant as apical, lateral and intercalary.

1. Apical Meristem - located at root and shoot tips
   • Apical meristems give rise to the primary plant body
   • These are responsible for the extension of the roots and shoots.
2. Lateral Meristem – present in the vascular and cork cambia
   • These are known as secondary meristems because they are responsible for

secondary growth, or increase in stem girth and thickness.

1. Intercalary Meristem – present at internodes, or stem regions between the places at which

leaves attach, and leaf bases, especially of certain monocotyledons—

e.g., grasses.

• • These are responsible for increasing the length of the internodal regions.
