Question

On the basis of molecular theory, explain why a solid cannot flow but can be heaped.

Solution

  • Intermolecular attractions are minimal due to the enormous intermolecular forces, that allow liquids and gases to flow.
  • Solids, on the other hand, have a lot less intermolecular space. The intermolecular interactions are strong, which gives them a distinct form and makes them hard. As a result, solids do not flow.
  • Because solids have a strong attraction between their particles, they have extremely little space between them.
  • They don't actually move, but they do vibrate. As a result, solids cannot flow but can be stacked.
