Question

On the basis of reactivity series, classify K,Fe,Pb,andAg from the view of their extraction.

Solution

  • The elements that are able to donate or lose electrons present in its valence shell are metals.
  • Based on their ability to lose electrons metals are arranged in the decreasing order of their reactivity and are called the reactivity series.
  • The metals that is having a greater tendency to lose electrons are placed at the top that is they are very reactive.
  • In the reactivity series, the order is K>Na(Sodium)>Ca(Calcium)>Mg(Magnesium)>Al(Aluminium)>Zn(Zinc)>Fe>Pb>H(Hydrogen)>Cu(Copper)>Hg(Mercury)>Ag>Au(Gold)
  • More reactive metals are extracted by electrolysis, moderately reactive metals are extracted by reduction with carbon, and less reactive metals are extracted by various chemical reactions.

So Potassium(K): Reactive metal and extracted by electrolysis.

Iron(Fe) and Lead (Pb): Medium reactivity and extracted by reduction with carbon

Silver(Ag): Less reactivity and extracted by chemical reactions.
