Solution

  1. The elements which are able to lose or donate electrons present in its valence shell are metals.
  2. Based on their ability to lose electrons metals are arranged in the decreasing order of their reactivity and are called the reactivity series.
  3. Unreactive metals do not react with water, acids, etc. but react with chlorides are present in the lowest position of the reactivity series.
  4. Mercury is present in the lowest position of the reactivity series and hence it will form chlorides.
  5. Mercury chlorides(HgCl2) is a sublimate as well.

So, the metal is mercury and its chlorides are sublimate.
