Question

On the basis of Werner's theory explain, why cobalt amine complex, CoCl34NH3 when treated with AgNO3 solution precipitates only one Cl ion even though there are three Cl ions?

Solution

In this compound, two Cl ions exhibit dual behavior of satisfying both primary and secondary valancies. These chloride ions do not get precipitated the D ion remained would get attached to the central metal atom via only secondary valency thus, it gets precipitated upon treatment with AgNO3 solution.
