Question

On the earth, a stone is thrown from a height in a direction parallel to the earth's surfaces while another stone is simultaneously dropped from the same height. Which stone would reach the ground first and why ?

Solution

  1. Both the stones will reach the ground simultaneously.
  2. This is because motion along the horizontal and motion along the vertical are independent of each other.
  3. In the vertical direction, for both the stones,

s=h,u=0,a=gFroms=ut+12at2t=2hg ( Equation of motion)
Hence, the time taken by both the stones to reach the ground must be the same.
