Solution

Fundamental Quantities:

  1. The quantities that do not depend on each other are called fundamental quantities.
  2. The units defined for such quantities are known as fundamental units.
  3. There are only 7 fundamental quantities.
  4. These are also referred to as base quantities.
  5. For example, mass(kg), length (m) , and time (s) are some fundamental quantities.

Derived Quantities:

  1. These quantities can be expressed in terms of the fundamental quantities.
  2. The units defined for such quantities are called derived units.
  3. There can be an unlimited number of derived quantities.
  4. For example, velocity (ms-1) and acceleration (ms-2) are some derived quantities.

Thus, the physical quantities are classified as fundamental or derived quantities based on their dependence on other units.
