On what principle does 'refining' of petroleum work?

Refining of petroleum wok on the principle of fractional distillation. The fractionating column has high temperature at the bottom and low at the top. The fraction of petroleum having higher boiling point distills at the bottom whereas the component having low boiling point can be separated from the top of the fractionating column.
