Question

on which factors does linear expansion depend ?

Open in App
Solution

Linear expansion depends on

  1. If the change in length is along one dimension (length) over the volume, then it is called linear expansion.
  2. The original length of solid. The linear expansion will be more for a longer rod in comparison to a shorter one.
  3. Increase in temperature. The linear expansion will be more for more rise in temperature.
  4. Material of rod. Linear expansion is different for different materials.
  5. For example, a copper rod will expand more than an iron one for the same rise in temperature.

Thus, Linear expansion depends on original length, increase in temperature, and material.
