In ideal conditions, an equilibrium has to be attained when the population size reaches the carrying capacity, that is resources in the habitat will be replenished at the rate required to sustain the population. However, in the real life scenario, mostly there is a time lag in the feedback to the habitat. Therefore, the population size will exceed the carrying capacity. And unable to sustain itself, the population size will fall, dropping below the carrying capacity and then increase again. Therefore an oscillation is seen near the steady state, in many scenarios.
