Question

One day, students were asked to perform an activity. They were told to identify the root system in some given plant samples by analysing the venation in leaves. Archana at the same time failed to do so. She got sad and asked her teacher to guide her after the test.

(a) How will you identify the root system by analysing the leaves?
(b) Distinguish two types of venation in leaves.
(c) What are the values shown by Archana?

Solution

(a). Venation:

  1. The arrangement of veins in the lamina of leaves is called venation.
  2. If the leaf has reticulate venation, the roots have the taproot system.
  3. If the leaf has parallel venation, the roots have a fibrous root system.

(b). Parallel venation:

If the veins run parallel to the midrib, it is called parallel venation.

Reticulate venation:

If the veins and veinlets form a network around the midrib, it is called reticulate venation.

(c). Values observed in Archana:

  1. Attentive towards her studies.
  2. Responsible student.
  3. Scientific attitude.
