Question

One gram mole NO2 at 57C and 2 atm pressure is kept in a vessel. Assuming the molecules to be moving with rms velocity. Find the number of collisions per second which the molecules make with one square meter area of the vessel wall.

Open in App
Solution

The RMS velocity of particles will be

vrms=3RTM=3(8.314)33046X103=423m/s

Thus, momentum change per unit area per second will be

ΔpAΔt=P

Assuming collision to be elastic, the molecules will return with the same speed. Hence,

N2mvrmsAΔt=P

NAΔt=P2mvrms

NAΔt=2X105(6.022X1023)2(46X103)(423)=3.1X1027

Answer is 3.1X1027
