Rutherford observed through his experiment that most of the alpha particles went straight through the atom and very few of them reflected back from the centre.
This proved that -
The atom is largely empty and the positive charge in an atom is not uniformly distributed.
The positive charge occupies an extremely small volume and is at the centre.
Also, almost all of the mass of an atom is concentrated at the centre.
