Question

One of the reaction that takes place in producing steel from iron ore is the reduction of iron (II) oxide by carbon monoxide to give iron metal and CO2.
FeO(s)+CO(g)Fe(s)+CO2(g)
;Kp=0.265 atm at 1050 K.
What are the equilibrium partial pressures of CO and CO2 respectively at 1050 K if the initial partial pressures are: PCO=1.4 atm and PCO2=0.80 atm?

Solution

The correct option is A PCO=1.739 atm and PCO2=0.461 atm

FeO(s)+CO(g)Fe(s)+CO2(g)t=0 1.4 atm 0.8 atmat equil (1.4+x) 0.8xQ=0.81.4=47=0.55
Q>K, system is not at equilibrium and to attain equilibrium it will shift in backward direction
Kp=0.265=0.8x1.4+x
On solving, x = 0.339
PCO=1.4+x=1.4+0.339=1.739
and PCO2=0.8x=0.80.339=0.461 atm
