One side of an equilateral triangle measures 8cm. Find its area using Heron's formula. What is its altitude?

Step 1: Finding the area of an equilateral triangle using heron's formula :

By heron's formula, A=ss-as-bs-c

where, a,b and c are sides of the triangle and s=a+b+c2.

Length of the side of the equilateral triangle =8cm

s=8+8+82=242=12

Area of the triangle = 1212-812-812-8

=12×4×4×4=3×4×4×4×4=4×43=163cm2

Step 2: Finding the altitude of the triangle :

We know that , Area = 12×b×h

163=12×8×hh=163×28h=43

Hence, the area of triangle is163cm2 and altitude is 43cm.
