Solution

A magnetic compass needle pointing north and south in the absence of a nearby magnet gets deflected when a bar magnet or a current carrying loop is brought near to it because the magnetic fields of the compass needle and the bar magnet interact with each other.
Salient features of magnetic lines of field concept are:

a. The field lines emerge from the north pole and merge at the south pole.
b. Inside the magnet, the direction of field lines is from its south pole to its north pole.
c. The magnetic field lines are closed curves.
d. The field is stronger, that is, the force acting on the pole of another magnet placed is greater where the field lines are crowded.
e. No two field lines are found to cross each other.
