Question

Ordinary chlorine has two isotopes C1735l and Cl1737 in the ratio 3:1. Calculate the relative atomic mass (atomic weight) of chlorine.

Open in App
Solution

Isotopes are atoms of the same element having the same atomic number but a different mass number.

Relative atomic mass of chlorine, Ar =(xA1+yA2)/x+y, where A1 and A2are relative masses of two isotopes and x and yare their relative abundances.

Therefore, Ar =(3×35+1×37)/3+1 =(105+37)/4

Ar=142/4 =35.5

Therefore. relative atomic mass of chlorine is 35.5 .
