An allele may be defined as one of two or more forms of a gene. An individual usually inherits two alleles for each gene, one from each parent.

A homozygous individual has two alleles of a gene that are identical while a heterozygous individual has different alleles for a gene.

For example, for the character of plant height in pea plants, there are two alleles- T(tall) and t(dwarf). An individual with allelic makeup TT will be homozygous and an individual with Tt will be heterozygous for that character.
