Question

Organize the following types of friction in order from highest to lowest: Sliding friction, static friction, and rolling friction.

Open in App
Solution

Static friction:

  1. It is a type of friction that acts between the object when the object just starts moving from its state of rest.
  2. As we know friction is caused by the interlocking of microscopic irregularities present on the surfaces.
  3. Due to more areas of contact, the Interlocking of irregularities is strong. Therefore static friction is the greatest.

Sliding friction:

  1. Sliding friction is a type of friction when the object is already in motion.
  2. Due to motion, the interlocking of irregularities present on the surface is not very strong.
  3. Sliding fraction is less than static friction.

Rolling friction:

  1. It is friction between two surfaces when one surface roll over the other surface.
  2. Due to less area in contact, the Interlocking between irregularities present on the surface is weak.
  3. Rolling friction is less than sliding friction.

Conclusion: Types of friction in order from highest to lowest: Static friction > Sliding friction > Rolling friction
