Ornaments of gold do not get corroded. Assign reason.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Corrosion

  • Corrosion is the process in which metals are retarded by air, moisture, chemical changes, etc.
  • Oxygen in the air oxides the metal layer when it is kept on open surfaces for a long time.

Step 2: Reason

  • Gold is unreactive metal because the nucleus of the gold is heavy such that the electrons must travel at the speed of light.
  • The 6s electrons in the gold are less accessible for bonding and their energy is dissimilar to many reactants.
  • Because of this property, gold (Au) is used to make ornaments.
  • So, ornaments of gold do not get corroded.
