Question

Ostwald's dilution law is applicable to all electrolytes. If true write 1, else write 0.

Open in App
Solution

Ostwald applied the law of mass action upon ionic equilibrium to verify whether equilibrium really exists or not.

The constancy of equilibrium constant (K) of the dissociation equilibrium of a weak electrolyte confirmed that equilibrium really exists. In the case of a strong electrolyte, the equilibrium constant does not come to be constant indicating thereby that a strong electrolyte remains completely ionised and hence there is no question of equilibrium.

Limitation
i) This is only for weak electrolytes not for strong electrolytes.
ii) This law is not applicable for strong electrolyte because strong electrolytes are almost completely ionized at all dilution and hence does not give accurate results.
