Out of a group of swans, 72 times the square root of the number are playing on the shore of a tank. The two remaining ones are playing, with amorous fight, in the water. What is the total number of swans?

Let the total number of swans be x.
Then,Number of swans playing on the shore of the tank =72x
It is given that there are two remaining swans
x=72x+2

x72x2=0

y272y2=0 (where y2=x)

2y27y4=0

2y(y4)+(y4)

y=4ory=12
y=4 (y=12 is not possible)

x=y2=42=16

Hence the total number of swans is 16.
