Out of a group of swans, 72 times the square root of the number are playing on the shore of a tank. The two remaining ones are playing in the water. What is the total number of swans?

Let the total number of swans be x
Now, x=72x+2
x72x2=0
Let x=y
y2=x
x72x2=0 becomes
y272y2=0
2y27y4=0
2y28y+y4=0
2y(y4)+1(y4)=0
(2y+1)(y4)=0
2y+1=0,y4=0
2y=1,y=4
y=12,4
x=12,4 where y=x
x=4 as x=14 swans are meaningless
x=16 by squaring on both sides
Hence, total number of swans is 16
