Question

out of cu2+ and cu+ ion which one is colourless and why

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
Electronic configuration of Cu+ is [Ar]18 3d10. It has no unpaired electrons. Whereas electronic configuration of Cu2+ is [Ar]18 3d9. Transition metals exhibit colours due to d-d transitions. d-d transitions occurs only when there is unpaired d electrons present or there is a vacancy in d subshell. So d-d transitions are not possible in case of Cu+, hence it is colourless. Whereas Cu2+ have partially filled d- orbital and an unpaired d electron, thus d-d transition can take place, and it exhibits colour.
