Solution

The correct option is D

Benzene in water

The correct option is (D):

Explanation for the correct answer:

Solutions:

  1. Solutions are basically the homogeneous mixtures of the two or more than two components.
  2. Basically water is a polar molecule as because the electrons of the Hydrogen atoms are easily pulled towards or by the electrons of the Oxygen atom because of the high electronegativity of Oxygen atom.
  3. Whereas Benzene is a nonpolar molecule because of the presence of many nonpolar Carbon-Hydrogen and so all in the equal proportion in the molecule ring.
  4. That's why Benzene in water is not an example of the solution as Benzene is non-polar in nature whereas the Water molecules are polar in nature.
  5. As for the formation of solution there would be like to like dissolution, but they are having different polarities due to which they will form different layers and will not dissolve.

Option (A):

Air:

  1. It is actually a variety of gases that is surrounding our earth and is necessary for living-beings.
  2. As it is the homogeneous mixture of the different types of gases such as Carbon dioxide, Oxygen, Helium, Hydrogen, Nitrogen etc.
  3. That's why it is an example of Gaseous solution.

Option (B):

Brass:

  1. It is actually an alloy of Copper as well as Zinc.
  2. Basically it is a substitutional alloy as the atoms of the two constituents are able to replace each other and withing the same crystal structure only.
  3. That's why Brass an alloy is also considered as a solid solution of the chemical elements Copper and Zinc.

Option (C):

Amalgam:

  1. It is actually an alloy of the Mercury and with some other metal maybe a solid or liquid at the room temperature.
  2. As it is an alloy, so it is considered as a solid solution in which the solvent must be a solid and solute must be a liquid.

Therefore, the correct option is (D) Benzene in water.
