Question

Out of N, O, Ne, Na, Na+select the species which have maximum and minimum ionization energy?

Open in App
Solution

Ionization energy:

  • Ionization energy is the minimum energy required by an electron in a gaseous atom or ion to remove it from the outermost valence shell.

Ionization energy trend across periods and groups:

  • The ionization energy decreases while moving from top to down in a group.
  • The ionization energy increases while moving from left to right in a period.
  • N, O, Ne are present in 2nd period
  • Na is present in the 3rd period.
  • Hence, Na has the minimum ionization energy among these elements.
  • The effective nuclear charge of Na+ is higher (no. of Proton =11) than Ne (no. of Proton =10).
  • Hence, Na+ has the maximum ionization energy.

Therefore, out of N, O, Ne, Na, and Na+, Na has the minimum ionization energy and Na+ has the maximum ionization energy.
