Question

Out of solid, liquid and gas

Which has maximum particle motion?

Open in App
Solution

Matter

  • Anything which can occupy space and has some mass which can be perceived by senses like touch, see, smell etc.
  • Matter mainly exist in solid, liquid, and gaseous state.

Solid-state

  • The molecules are closely packed, so that the interpartcle space is least.
  • The interparticle space is least so the particle motion is restricted or least.
  • It has a definite shape and volume.
  • Example: ice

Liquid state

  • The molecues are less closely packed compared to solid state.
  • The inter particle space is larger comaperd to solid state so the particle motion will be higher compaerd to solid state
  • It has a definite volume but takes the shape of container it occupies
  • Example: water

Gaeous state

  • The molecules are loosely packed compared to liquid and solid state
  • The inter particle space is largest so the particle motion will be higher
  • Due to higher particle motion, they easily occupy the space provided, i.e they undergo diffusion easily.
  • Diffusion: The movement of molecules from higher concentration to lower concentration
  • It has no definite shape and volume
  • Example: water vapour

Therefore, gaseous state has high particle motion
