Question

Out of solid, liquid or gaseous state, which state has low molecular motion of its molecules ?

Open in App
Solution

Molecular motion;

  1. Molecular movement is defined as the movement of constituent particles or molecules in a certain direction.
  2. The energy possessed by a particle due to its motion is kinetic energy.
  3. The particles of solids are closely packed and the empty spaces between the particles are very small as compared to liquids and gases.
  4. Due to the close packing of the particles, they can only vibrate about their fixed positions because they cannot move freely.
  5. They are constrained within a crystal structure so that their movement relative to other molecules is limited to vibration.
  6. As a result, the kinetic energy is very less as compared to liquids and gases.

Hence, the solid state has low molecular motion of its molecules in comparison with liquid and gaseous state.
