Question

Out of the following two coordination entities which is chiral (optically active)?
(a) cis[CrCl2(Ox)2]3+
(b) trans[CrCl2(Ox)2]3

Open in App
Solution

Optical isomers are mirror images that can not be super imposed on each other, hence,
cis[CrCl2(OX)2]3 is chiral,
trans[CrCl2(OX)2]3 is symmetrical and not optically active.
See the figure.
