Homologous organs

  • The organs which have a common origin ( same ancestry) and same basic structure but perform different functions are called homologous organs.
  • They all have similar ancestral origins and structures but different functions.
  • An example of this is the wings of bats and birds.
  • These structures are homologous in that they are the modifications of the forelimb bone structure of early reptiles but their functions are slightly different.
  • For birds it also functions as body covering and for bats, it also functions as shock absorbers.

Hence, the wings of a bird and the wings of a bat are examples of homologous organs.
