Egg laying animals are termed oviparous. Fishes and frogs lay unfertilized eggs whereas reptiles and birds lay fertilized eggs and in both cases they are called oviparous animals.

When an organism gives rise to young ones, with the fetus deriving nourishment from the parent through means of a placenta, they are called viviparous animals. Whereas when the fertilized eggs are not laid, but they develop inside a parent's body, without deriving nourishment from the parent body and being supported by the yolk sac, they are called ovoviviparous animals.
