Solution

Oxidation of Toluene with CrO3:

The oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde is carried out in presence of acetic anhydride due to following reasons:

  • To carry out the oxidation of the methyl group of toluene to the aldehyde by the complex formation followed by hydrolysis.
  • To reduce the corrosive nature of the system and give a better yield of benzaldehyde.
  • To prevent the further oxidation of benzaldehyde to benzoic acid.
