Question

Oxides and hydroxide of beryllium in group 2 is

Open in App
Solution

The oxide and hydroxide of beryllium are amphoteric in nature, while rest of the group members form basic oxides and hydroxides.
Theory
Anomalous Properties of Beryllium:
  1. Be has exceptionally small atomic and ionic sizes because of high I.E. and small size, it forms compounds which are largely covalent and get easily hydrolysed..
  2. Be does not exhibit coordination numbers greater than four. Valence shell of Be consists of four orbitals only. The remaining members of the group can have a coordination number of six by making use of the d-orbitals.
  3. The oxide and hydroxide of Be are amphoteric in nature. Unlike the hydroxides of other elements in the group.
