Oxygen is transported by the blood in two ways - as physically dissolved in the blood plasma and the rest of it bound to the haemoglobin in the RBCs. Only about 2% of the oxygen is transported in the dissolved state in plasma, while the remaining 98% is transported chemically bound to haemoglobin.
