RBCs are Red Blood cells that contain a red pigment called Haemoglobin. Every Hemoglobin molecule contains 4 Heme groups to which Iron in Ferrous form is attached. Each iron molecule binds to one Oxygen molecule i.e. 2 Oxygen atoms. Since there are 4 Iron molecules, 4 molecules or 8 atoms of oxygen is carried by Haemoglobin molecule reversibly.
