Oxygen molecule has the formula O2 whilst sulphur is S8. Explain why?

Dear Student,

Oxygen atom being small in size has the tendency to form multiple bonds while sulphur atom, being large in size, forms single bonds with other sulphur atoms. The puckered ring structure, S8 is most stable.
