Question

1.(a) A cube of side 5cm is immmersed in water and then in saturated salt solution. In which case, will it experience a greater buoyant force?

(b) If each side is reduced to 4cm,and then immersed in water, what will be the effect on the buoyant force experienced by the cube as compared to the first case.Give reason

Solution

Dear Student!

Buoyant force depends on 2 factors:

1) Density of the liquid in which they are immersed

2) Volume of the object

So, in the first case as salt water is denser than pure water it will exert more buoyant force on the object.

Secondly, when the volume of the cube is reduced the buoyant force experienced by the cube (of smaller volume) will be lesser.
