Question

1. A taxi driver nothed the reading on the odometer fitted in the vehicle as 1052km when he started the journey.after 30minutes drive,he noted the odometer reading was 1088km.find the average speed of the taxi.

2.a boy is running on a straight road.he runs 500m towars north in 2.10 minutes and then turn back and runs 200m in 1.00minute. calculate (a)his average speed and magnitude of average velocity during first 2.10 minutes and (b)his average speed and magnitude of average velocity during the whole journey.

3.it has been estimated that the radio signal takes 1.27seconds to reach the earth from the surface of the moon.calculate the distance of the moon from yhe earth .speed of radio signal takes=3*10tothe power8 m/s(speed of light in air).

Solution

a) average speed = total distance/total time

Total distance = (500 + 200)m = 700m

Total time = (2.10 + 1.00)min =3.10 min =186sec

Average speed = 700/186 = 3.763 m/s

Average velocity = total displacement/ total time

Displacement = 500m

Time =2.10 min = 126sec

Average velocity – 500/126 =3.968 m/s

b) Average speed is the same

Average velocity = Total displacement from initial position /total time

Displacement = (500 – 200)m = 300m

Time = 3.10min = 186 sec

Average velocity = 300/186 = 1.612 m/s

c) use the formula Distance = speed x time
