2. Solid sodium chloride does not allow electricity to pass through. Why?

Solution

1. An electrolyte is a substance which decomposes into ions on passing electric current through it due to which it conducts electricity. Although copper metal conducts electricity, it doesnot decompose on passing electric current. Therefore, it is a non- electrolyte.

2. The movement of ions towards oppositively charged electrodes causes electric current to flow. The ions of solid sodium chloride are not free to move rather they are held together by strong electrostatic forces. Due to this, solid sodium chloride does not allow electricity to pass through.
